The End
Season 5, Episode 20

This episode is the last episode of the 5th Season. A 12-year-old boy named Gibson Praise, a chess master known around the world, is shot at while competing. The bullet hits the man opposite him and he dies. Agent Spender is given the case (to find the shooter) and he picks a team of agents to work on the case with him. He picks Scully as one of them. Skinner tells Mulder about it, because he thinks that he could help Spender. Mulder walks into the teams meeting while they're watching a videotape of the shooting. Spender doesn't like Mulder at all. It must run in the family. You see, Spender is the Cigarette-Smoking Man's son. He's told this at the end of this episode (the end of The End : ). Mulder notices and shows Spender that Gibson looked behind him right before the shot was fired, and moved slightly to the side, like he knew that someone was going to shoot him. Spender tells Mulder to leave, but Diana Fowley (played by Mimi Rogers) says "I think Agent Mulder is right." Mulder turns out to be right.
Meanwhile, in a cabin, the supposedly dead Cigarette-Smoking Man is found by two masked men. CSM shoots one of them, but the other points a gun at him and pulls off his mask. It turns out to be Alex Krycek. CSM smiles as Krycek says that he was sent to bring him back. The men in the Syndicate tell him that Gibson is a threat to them and needs to be eliminated. They want him to do the job. CSM agrees.
Diana, as Frohike puts it, "used to be Mulder's chickadee back when he started the X-Files." Diana and Scully instantly dislike eachother from the moment they meet. You could even say they were jealous of eachother. Mulder clearly still had some feelings for Diana, but as we all know, he likes Scully a lot, too (notice, he seems to go for girls with D names. Diana and Dana). Mulder & Diana had broken up when she left the FBI in the U.S. to go to Europe to work on cases about terrorist bombing. They both think the same way, and believe in the paranormal. K, enough about Diana. On to the rest of the episode.
Mulder visits the killer who shot the chess player. (he had been caught) Mulder offers him immunity if he'll cooperate and tell him why he was going to shoot the boy, and who told him to.
Diana & Mulder both have the theory that Gibson can read minds. Mulder thinks that that's how he became such an amazing chess player, he can tell what his opponent is thinking. They run Gibson through a series of mind tests, and he doesn't make one mistake. He doesn't deny his ability, but Scully doesn't believe in it at first. Scully takes the data from the mind tests to the Lone Gunman, while Mulder and Diana watch Gibson in the pysciatric hospital. When she returns to show Mulder the results, she sees he and Diana holding hands. She turns around and walks out of the building, confused and jealous. She calls Mulder on her cell phone and tells him that she's at work, and askes him to come and look at the results.
When Mulder goes to the hospital parking lot, he sees Spender talking to CSM. Spender tells him that he doesn't know who the man was and that the shooter wishes to speak to him. Mulder goes to meet Sully. She shows the results to Skinner, Mulder, and Diana. It turns out that there's a part of Gibson's brain called the "God Module" which gives him the ability to read minds. Mulder thinks that "they"(refering to the men who are behind the government conspiracies, alien coverups, etc.) want to kill Gibson because he's a threat to them. He also thinks that he holds the key to the X-Files, and is genetic proof of the existance of extraterrestrial life. He askes Skinner to ask the Attorney General if he can offer the shooter immunity, even if it means risking the X-Files. But when he goes to visit the shooter, he finds him dead in his cell.
Meanwhile, Scully watches over Gibson in a motel room. Diana comes to relieve her, and she gets shot through the window. She doesn't die, but she goes to the hospital. Afterwards, with Mulder lying on his couch (worried about Diana), Scully talks on the phone with Skinner. He tells her that there's talk about shutting down the X-Files.
While Mulder and Scully are talking in Mulder's apartment, CSM goes down to their office in the basement, and pulls out the file on Mulder's sister, Samantha. He lights a cigarette. Spender finds him walking out of the building. He tells him he's his father, then the smoke alarm goes off. When Spender turns back around, CSM is gone. Mulder and Scully rush to their office, only to find it has been burned down (well, just burned. It's in the basement) There's nothing left of the X-Files. Scully hugs Mulder, but he's to shocked to respond.
